Unit Level Serialisation
Unit level serialisation means every individual product unit carries its own unique identifier. Not one code per SKU. Not one code per batch. One unique code per individual unit - from the moment it leaves the production line to the moment a consumer scans it.

How it works
The commercial and operational value of unit level serialisation is significant. Batch-level tracking tells you a group of products left a warehouse. Unit level serialisation tells you exactly which products went where, were scanned at which distribution points, and ended up in which consumer markets.
ProtectCode implements unit level serialisation at scale. The platform manages millions of unique codes across multiple markets, product lines, and distribution channels from a single self-service dashboard.
One unique QR code per individual product unit
Unique to every individual product unit
Tracks every unit from manufacture to consumer scan
Geographic, device, and time data from every scan
Rules-based monitoring at unit level
Self-service dashboard - no analyst or BI tool required
Every individual product tracked, not batches or shipments
Data updated live with no processing lag
Works across every market and distribution channel
Use cases
ProtectCode is deployed across FMCG, pharmaceutical, wine, cosmetics, and
export-focused industries globally.
Production line
Unique codes assigned at manufacture. Applied to labels or packaging using existing printing equipment.
Distribution
Every scan at distribution touchpoints creates a chain of custody record. Geographic data from every scan.
Retail and consumer
Consumer authentication at point of purchase. Unit level data from every consumer scan worldwide.
Recall and compliance
Target specific individual units in a recall. Regulatory documentation generated from unit level scan records.
Supply chain intelligence
Aggregate unit level data reveals distribution patterns, market performance, and anomalies invisible at batch level.
ERP integration
Unit level scan data synchronised with SAP, Oracle, and any ERP system via REST API.

Unit level serialisation means assigning a unique identifier to every individual product unit - not just to product types, batches, or production runs. Every unit has its own unique code that is traceable from manufacture to consumer. This is different from batch serialisation where all units in a batch share the same code.

Batch serialisation gives all units in a production batch the same code. Unit level serialisation gives every individual unit a different, unique code. Unit level is required for DSCSA pharmaceutical compliance and is the only approach that enables individual unit tracking, consumer authentication, and precise product recall targeting.

Unit level serialisation enables capabilities that batch serialisation cannot: individual unit consumer authentication, precise product recall targeting, grey market diversion monitoring at unit level, and consumer scan data that identifies exactly which specific products consumers are engaging with.

Yes in several sectors. DSCSA requires unit level serialisation for pharmaceutical products in the US. EU FMD requires it for EU pharmaceutical markets. EU Digital Product Passport requirements will extend unit level product data requirements to additional product categories from 2027.
